THE ZANTAC BREAKDOWN

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) first alerted patients and health care professional of potential risks of cancer caused by Ranitidine in September 2019. Sanofi, a pharmaceutical company and manufacture of ZANTAC announced a voluntary recall due to its concerns of a potential dangerous cancer-causing chemical knows as N-nitroso dimethylamine or NDMA.

On April 1, 2020, the FDA recalled ZANTAC and Ranitidine from the market entirely see: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-requests-removal-all-ranitidine-products-zantac-market

NDMA was once used in the production of rocket fuel and is primarily used to induce cancer in laboratory mice for study. The international Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified NDMA as a B2 (probably human) Carcinogen. It is also known as a potent hepatotoxin which can cause liver damage. According to recent testing done by the FDA on ranitidine samples from various drug manufacturers, more than half of the 18 samples tested contained unacceptably high levels of NDMA (more than 0.32 parts per million (ppm) of NDMA).
